About To Buy Auto: Need Help! Pontiac Torrent from Dealer?

Hi there. I drove a Pontiac Torrent yesterday and really liked it. It is a 2006 AWD with many options and 20,000 miles. The interior and exterior look very good, tires new.

The dealers price is 16,000.00 dollars. They’re a large dealer with They’re calling me back today to ask for a deposit.

I know i like the car. My question is, how much should i ask them to reduce the price, if at all? What assurances should i make sure are in place? Is the manufacturer’s warranty still good at this mileage? I would think it is.

Lastly, would you take this vehicle to a mechanic before buying and have him go through it? I know the tires are good, but would you want to verify brakes and exhaust… or do you figure at 20k you’re pretty assured these will be good?

If you want it for less you need to check around see what the going price is at other car lots for the same style vehicle. Are you paying cash or financing and if financing do you have a down payment, if so then if you can get it for less then try, but do not go to low. They want $16K and if other car lots have it for $14K or $15K then you have room to negotiate and if some one else has it for less and this dealer won’t budge on price then they don’t want to sell it very bad. If you put a deposit to hold the vehicle make sure you can get that money back, because you may find a better deal! If you can’t get the deposit back then do your checking around quickly. And yes find out about the warranty, at 20K miles there should be some factory warranty left. As for having it looked at by a mechanic you should go with your gut feeling on that since you have driven it. While driving it ask yourself how does everything feel, are the breaks squeaky, does the steering feel tight, is the engine slugish or does it get up and go. If your not sure what to then it never hurts to take it and have it looked at because then you hacve that reassurance but at 20k miles the vehicle should be pretty sound. And one more thing to remember, it is all wheel drive and this means if something in the drivetrain breaks and the warranty has expired—- big $$$$$ to fix it. Being an all wheel drive vehicle means it is wearing on all the drivetrain parts all the time while driving it. I’m not trying to scare you out of the vehicle but just be sure it is what you want because after all this is a large purchase.
