I’m having power failures after finally getting my car to start. What’s up?

I have a 1997 Toyota Rav4. It wouldn’t start at all today. It was as if the battery had died… no ding ding when the key was inserted, engine made no noise, power locks did not work. There was no indication of lights left on, doors left open, etc. We tried jump starting – car would crank but as soon as we took the cables off the battery, the car would die. We took in the alternator and battery to an auto store to have them tested, both checked out fine. After putting the parts back in we were able to get the car to crank but now the dash lights do not come on, the gauges don’t work, the vents don’t come on, power mirrors and windows don’t work and the brake lights and turn signals do not work. We have checked all the fuses and nothing has blown. Is there a reset button we need to push in somewhere to reset power to these items? Could it be the terminal is so bad, it’s not making a good enough connection for these things to work? Or a cable that has gone bad from the battery?

The number one cause of something like this is poor connections at the battery terminals. Oriental vehicles often have battery cable terminal end made of shaped thin metal. The slightest bit of corrosion virtually destroys them.

An OEM (original equipment manufacture) positive battery cable terminal should be available from the dealer; this is ideal. However, you may have to settle for an aftermarket universal battery cable terminal.

Instructions for the universal terminals indicate that one should strip the insulation from the cable and to clamp the bared wires in the terminal. This you should avoid doing as it greatly promotes corrosion.

Instead, you should attempt to utilize that part of the cable which already has a round eyelet terminal and run one of the bolts in the universal battery terminal to secure it.

You will probably not be able to use this method on the negative terminal; so do as it says with the negative cable.

The terminals on the battery need to be cleaned possibly using a single edge razor or a battery cleaning tool. The terminals need to be showing shiny clean metal to qualify as clean.

The most important factor is that all connections at the battery need to be so tight that you cannot pull them loose by hand. This means cable-to-terminal and terminal of cable-to-terminal of battery.

That should do it.
