Is this a transmission or clutch problem? or neither?

93 Nissan Maxima, was driving down the highway, smelled an engine odor, thought it was the 18 wheeler in front of me. Drove another 10 miles arrived at my location. Trying to leave my destination, the car started but was moving forward like my breaks were on. Went about 1/2 mile further car would not go any further. Next day, went to the car to test it and it rode normal, however I just moved it around the parking lot, didnt hear anything wrong. Fluid is in the clutch tube, no place to put transmission fluid since its a standard. People in Auto zone say transmission, friends say clutch. I just read someone had a simular situation, because Im having electrical problems as well(my battery keeps building acid)every few days I need to twiggle the cable and then it starts. Can one of you Yahoo pros give me something to look at and fix?

It is definitely not the clutch. If it were the transmission, that is normally a throw out bearing, and that would just make you free wheel, not stay in gear.

If it does it again, place your transmission in neutral, and jack the front end up and try and move both front wheels, I think you will find one of them is froze up.

The smell and locking up leads me to believe you have a dry wheel bearing, and that would explain the (Hot Metal) smell. Your wheel bearing is getting hot, and finally freezes up. When you went back, it had cooled down and could move. Had you driven it besides the parking lot, it would have frozen up again.

It would be a front wheel bearing. They are fairly inexpensive from Auto Zone. Be sure to pack the bearings with plenty of grease before installing. Work wheel bearing grease in between the bearing rollers and use plenty of grease. You should also replace the bearing races. Be sure to ask the store what you will need.
