Defining Block ATTRIBUTES

Block ATTRIBUTES are not so different from text objects. They can, however be used for specific purposes within a block and therefore have some additional properties. We will see how to define them and their properties. The command for creating an attribute is ATTDEF. It can also be found in the “Insert” tab of the ribbon menu.

The attribute definition has not been changed significantly for quite a long time. While it may not have to offer a lot visually, all of the properties of an attribute can be deifned through this window. We start with three main properties whenever an attribute is defined.

1) Tag: The attribute’s tag. We use stickers to tell us the contents of a box. As the attributes may vary in every block, we need a constant, non-changing tag to let us know what that attribute is. Tags can be named with prefixes like “TAG-” or “ATAG-“. For example, “TAG-TITLE” “TAG-POWER“, “TAG-ROOMAREA” etc.

2) Prompt: The user is prompted for attribute values when blocks with attributes are placed. The question that will be asked should be written here. You can type short messages like “User Name:“, “Board Capacity:“, “Room Area:” etc.

3) Default: In some cases, the user won’t be propmpted for a value. Default values are used in such cases. There is also another button to the right of this box. FIELD objects that will show ready values in AutoCAD can be accessed here. We’ll see an applied example in our next article.

Having defined these values, we can now configure the attribute properties.

1) Invisible: Marking this renders the attribute invisible. This is appropriate for quantity survey uses. ATTMODE or ATTDISP system values may override this settings.

2) Constant: When marked, the attribute is given the ‘Default‘ value and cannot be changed by the user.

3) Verify: When marked, the user is propmted twice for the “Prompt” value, and will be prompted until both entries match each other. Convenient to use for passwords.

4) Preset: The default value is used without user prompt. Can be changed later.

5) Lock Position: When marked, the attribute is fixed (relative to the block). When this is not marked, the attribute text can be moved after the block is placed. The attribute then moved with the block if moved. Only its position relative to the block can be changed (AutoCAD 2007 and above)

6) Multiple lines: Multi line texts can be used when marked (AutoCAD 2007 and above).

As you can see, attributes are really flexible objects. They can be invisible, fixed, variable. They thus can be implemented for various uses. All block attributes are fundamentally AutoCAD TEXT objects. Hence they have the settings for texts objects. Let’s have a look at those settings:

1) Justification: Sets the justification of the text..

2) Text style: Sets the text style to be used.

3) Annotative: When this is marked, the block attribute will have been set for printing in different scales.

4) Text height: Text height can be specified here..

5) Rotation: This is the placement angle of the text..

6) Boundary width: When multiline texts are selected, the number of lines will be determined with the values specified here.

Apart from numeric values, entries can also be made through the buttons. After all values are defined, hit OK to close this window and place the block attribure. Block attributes are placed in drawings as DEFINITIONS and REFERENCES just like blocks themselves. Their definitions are placed with the “TAG” line on the screen.

Once they are added onto the block definitions they get their values as the block is placed in the drawing.

Attribute Management:

The BATTMAN command or the Block Attribute Manager that can be accessed through the ribbon interface helps you access all the block attributes.

This is one of the classic windows of AutoCAD. All buttons are placed in an easy to understand manner. All blocks are listed under the “Block:” heading. If there are many blocks in the drawing, you can select one with the “Select Block” button. The attributes for the selected block are listed. Double clicking on one of them or hitting the “Edit..” button opens up anoother window where all the properties of the attribute are displayed.

You can return to the previous screen by hitting the “OK” button after making the required changes in this window. Do not forget changes made wil not be reflected immediately in the drawing.
