The Top Ten Most-Often Used AutoCAD Commands

I’ve been using AutoCAD programs for the past 8 years now. I took special courses back in 2002 when it was all the rage for us Architecture students in the Philippines. Not only will it make you look all ‘cool’ because you know how to use AutoCAD, it would also greatly help you with your thesis works. Imagine all those 30 pieces of 30 x 40 cm presentation boards you will use for your thesis defense. All manually drafted (We still used watercolors and colored pens and ink to present our proposals back then. No computers!) So it’s really an advantage for you if you know Photoshop, Corel Draw and AutoCAD programs. It makes you life so much easier. Not to mention extra free time to watch movies and have a date while you are in the middle of your thesis!

Until now, I am still using AutoCAD for most of my work. I’ve already worked on versions 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and I am currently using the 2010 version free 3d models. Through the release of different versions, I have tested some of the commands they have upgraded and removed. But the following commands have been the most often used commands ever:

1. Line

You can’t draw a wall without using the line command. You pretty much can’t do anything without using this command: walls, windows, roofs, stairs, railing, etc. Unless your plan is made up of polygons and circles. Keyboard shortcut is L.

2. Polyline

Polylines are similar to line commands, except they are a bit more powerful. You can create a continuous line or a rectangle. The end result of lines are grouped together forming a single entity. You can also manipulate the shape it has made by making use of the grips at each end of the line without even breaking the whole entity. Unless you exploded the while thing. Keyboard shortcut is PLINE.

3. Rectangle

Rectangles are even closed shaped boxes. Perfect for plans who require even division of rooms.
Keyboard shortcut is REC.

4. Dimension

Ah. What will we do without the dimensions? We can easily glanced on a portion of the plan and determine its length and width without even running for the scale rule. Hopefully, the drafter is correct in the dimension he had placed. Dimension provides a whole range of dimensioning for precise measurements. Keyboard shortcut DIM.

5. Block Editor

I love this command. I have endless files of small portions to edit. And it saves a lot of time if you are just using one block of plans. So if there are things you need to change, you only need to update one set and the remaining sets are updated after saving your changes. Keyboard shortcut BEDIT.

6. Purge

I often hate it when several people have already used and abused the files I have created. And the result of this is the file keeps getting bigger. To remove excess junk from the files, I used the Purge command to clean my files before submission. Keyboard shortcut PU.

7. Circle

Circles are very useful for details: trees, door swings, window swings, annotations, roads, markings, etc. Just pick a center and enter a radius and you are all set. Keyboard shortcut C or CI.

8. Erase/Trim

The easiest command to use. After drawing several things on the model space, your boss will come up behind you and say, the project is canceled. Just type the keyboard shortcut and you wipe your slate clean. Keyboard shortcut E. Keyboard shortcut for trim is TR.

9. Copy

Another versatile command. Whenever I am running short of time. I open other files and copy the necessary details and put them on my file. Voila! A new drawing file to send for submission. Just make sure the annotations are correct. Keyboard shortcut C or CO.

10. Text

Text or annotations are used when you need to explain some portions of the drawing that you cannot interpret through the use of drawings. Makes it easier to understand what the hatch represents. Or what the circles are in that portion of the wall (its nuts and bolts not holes!) Keyboard shortcut T and free 3d models.
