Autoclaves are used for steam sterilization of research tools and consumables. The high temperature and pressure of the steam removes microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. The autoclave is started by pressing a start button, and so begins automatic operation of all parts of the sterilization cycle (fill, sterilize, exhaust and dry).

Autoclaves are also provided with large digital displays. Benchmark autoclaves are available in models such as Mini Benchtop and Benchtop Autoclave with 230 V and 120 V electrical specifications. The 16 liters autoclave offers three preset standard cycle options for sterilization of liquids, wrapped instruments, unwrapped instruments, or plastic wares. ‘Dry only’ is another option in new versions, for extending drying time at the end of a cycle. For particular applications, the user can modify program settings. Another noticeable feature is that each unit is supplied with three trays, with a suitable tray removal tool.

As a safety measure, the autoclave is provided with an electrical and mechanical safety interlock, to prevent the door from opening till pressure reaches zero PSI.
