Anonymous Blocks

You might have come accross some blocks that have names starting with ‘*’ in AutoCAD. These are special blocks used for hatching, dimensioning, dynamic blocks and non-uniformly scaled blocks. These blocks are not defined by the user.

What types of anonymous blocks are there?

1. *U####: Normal anonymous blocks.
2. *E####: Non-uniformly scaled blocks (different scales along X, Y and Z axis).
3. *X####: Hatch objects.
4. *D####: Dimension objects.
5. *A####: Anonymous group objects.

Which processes create an anonymous block?

Your edits on dynamic blocks are shown as anonymous blocks. They show up with names like ‘*U5‘ in thier DXF codes.

The EXPORTLAYOUT command exports all objects in your paper space to the model space. This process converts all dynamic blocks into anonymous blocks. Custom objects created by software (like Autodesk Architectural wall objects) are also converted to anonymous blocks.

Non-uniformly scaled blocks, sometimes cannot be fully broken down when exploded. These objects are converted into a single block with a name starting with ‘*E‘.

Annotative objects are displayed differently with various scales. If ‘Visual fidelity‘ is switched on, all representations are saved as different anonymous blocks on different layers.

Just download (see Download) the .CHM file MyHelp and copy it to the Help subfolder in the installation folder of your AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Map or similar product – version 2004, 2005, 2006 or higher.

How to import CEL files (Microstation blocks) into AutoCAD ?

Files with the .CEL extension are usually block libraries from the software application Microstation. AutoCAD does not support direct import of such files, but you can use a simple trick.

The internal format of CEL files (V8) is the same as the format of Microstation drawings – DGN – and this format is supported in standard AutoCAD. So you can simply rename your .CEL file to .DGN and then load it in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT with the standard command DGNIMPORT. You can then complete the conversion by saving the file to the DWG or DXF format.
