Automatic Cat Feeder

Is it save to leave my 3 yr old cat home all alone?

Me and my family are going on vacation for 7 days. We have an automatic pet feeder to feed my cat. Problem is.. no one will be coming to check her everyday (we have asked, they’re all on vacation!). We can’t afford for boarding services too. Please I need your help! Best answer will be given to those who give lots of information!

I wouldn’t recommend leaving a cat alone for that long, simply just in case their water/food runs out or the feeder malfunctions, plus it can’t be nice for her emotionally. Is there not a friend or acquaintance who could take her in for the week at their own place or a neighbour that could come and check on her? If there’s quite some time before your holiday, you could maybe put out some notices to the local cat fostering community in your area, explain the difficulty you’re having and maybe one of them could take your cat for a week (I know some people who’ve asked for this sort of thing in my area – they’ve got in touch with local shelters who have fostering contacts or have even advertised on Craigslist).

If you’re really stuck, then I agree with what the others are saying in terms of leaving plenty of water (I’d recommend much more than your cat would need i.e. a dozen decent sized bowls), lots of dry food, a couple of large litter trays and plenty of toys. Cat-proofing the house is also essential – no stray cables, objects that can be knocked over or ingested and furniture that you don’t want damaged covered up. Also make sure there’s adequate temperature control so that she doesn’t become ill from overheating or dehydration as it’s summer. Secure all windows and doors make sure there are plenty of comfortable places for her to sleep.
