i need to buy an automatic litter box for my grandparents three cats. any suggestions on a good one?

reviews i can find on automatic litter boxes vary greatly. i can’t get to their house everyday to change the litter for them, and with three cats its getting to be a mess. they really can’t afford $300 for a litter-box. does anyone know of a good one?

I have yet to find an automatic litterbox worth the money. I recently sold my two Littermaid ones on craigslist (which is a good place to look for one, btw.)

I recently bought a Tidy Cats Breeze litterbox system. It’s not automatic, but it’s working well for me. It has non-absorbent pellets that sit in a slotted trey. Beneath that there is another trey into which you place an absorbent pad. The pad absorbs the urine, so there’s no urine scooping to do: you just have to remove the poo. I was thinking that something like this might be easier for your grandparents to scoop themselves?

If your grandparents have trouble getting down to the floor to scoop a litterbox, you might consider putting the litterbox on a small table or something (as long as the cats can get to it, as well.) This way your grandparents don’t have to bend down to scoop. This has worked well for some of the elderly people I worked with while volunteering at the shelter.

I’ve heard good things about the Litter Robot, but not only is it one of the more expensive ones on the market, I think it’s a real eye sore. If I were ever going to attempt an auto box again, that’s the way I’d go. I can definitely say that there was NOTHING I liked about the Littermaid models. Still, if you can find one for cheap on Freecycle or Craigslist, it may be better than nothing!
