How to open water proof watch case?

I wanna open the back of my watch, its fairly old: waterproof, timex, automatic movements. Any tips or advice? The back is a smooth surface, no tabs to use an opening tool to twist. I’ve hear that I’m just asking for trouble this route. Any honest answer would help!!
