We’re a 1 income family w/a mortgage & the usual bills. We need a cheap used reliable car.?

Any suggestions as to what model or make?!? Good gas mileage, 4 doors, low-maintenance, we want safety and a brand that will keep our auto insurance rates lower. Needs to fit a kid seat too and have trunk space for groceries and a stroller. We can spend up to $4000. Would like to keep this one for a while (years).

My husband would use this mainly as a car to get to work, close to an hour round trip. Any suggestions and advice on how much mileage, features to look for, where to shop, resale value, buyer beware warnings) are appreciated!

Thank you for your question. You want a lot for $4000.00 and to expect that a car for that amount of money will last for years isn’t reasonable. You would be better off putting that money down on a newer gently pre-owned vehicle like a 2006 or 2005 with low low miles I’m talking under 50,000. You would do well with any Volkswagon, Honda, Suburu, or Dodge. How’s your credit by the way? The reason I say this is because generally cars you could buy for four thousand dollars or less are usually really old by industry standards like 1998-2003 with high mileage, no warranties and mechanically unreliable. Why spend your money trying to keep a car like that on the road a couple months after you buy it rather than buy a car you won’t have to worry about for 3 or 4 years and with the way you plan to use the vehicle you may be better off getting a newer used with low miles and some kind of a warranty. That makes more sense to me than spending your hard earned money on something you’ll end up hating later. Four thousand down with good credit will get you any car pretty much that you want – if you have questionable credit get a cosigner and you’ll have a car deal with a decent interest rate and reasonable monthly payments.
